The AIY Vision Kit from Google lets you build your own intelligent camera that can see and recognize objects using machine learning. All of this fits in a handy little cardboard cube, powered by a Raspberry Pi.

Everything you need is provided in the kit, including the Raspberry Pi.

  • Two options provided for configuration:
    • Option 1: Using the AIY Projects app, for those with an Android smartphone. That should require:
    • Android smartphone
    • Windows, Mac, or Linux computer
    • Wi-Fi connection
    • Optional: Monitor or TV (any size will work) with a HDMI input
    • Optional: Normal-sized HDMI cable and mini HDMI adapter
    • Option 2: Using a monitor, mouse, and keyboard, for those without an Android smartphone. That should require:
    • Windows, Mac, or Linux computer
    • Mouse
    • Keyboard
    • Monitor or TV (any size will work) with a HDMI input
    • Normal-sized HDMI cable and mini HDMI adapter
    • Adapter to attach your mouse and keyboard to the kit. Below are two different options.
    • Either, by using USB On-the-go (OTG) adapter cable (converts Raspberry Pi micro USB port to normal-sized USB port) for combo devices.
    • Or, by using Micro USB Hub (provides multiple USB ports for traditional keyboard and mouse connections).
    • Micro USB power supply:
      • Best option: USB Power supply with 2.1 Amps via micro-USB B connector.
      • Second-best choice: Phone charger with 2.1A of power (sometimes called a fast charger).
      • Important note: Avoid using your computer to power the Raspberry Pi to prevent insufficient power and potential SD card corruption leading to boot failures or errors.
